The "idea" of Heaven and the afterlife comes from wanting to be immortal, exist forever. I have to admit, even I want to exist forever. Why do humans feel a desire to live forever?

After the first billion years immortality will become quite boring.

People who don't believe in an afterlife want to cling on to the material world for as long as they can.

Material life (humans, animals, trees,) seems to die but transfers to the Source, the Universe, and lives on forever. The soul's energy can never be destroyed. The earth is just part of the chain of life, the part we can see, the rest remains hidden until our end, then all is revealed.

I personally crave immortality because I want the time it is going to take to learn everything there is to learn. I am so curious about so many things and there just isn't enough time in one lifetime to learn it all...read everything ever written, it would be incredible...and yet watching as everyone else slowly passed might have some small effect on the psyche after awhile though...

We already are immortal!
We existed before we were born here, we will all be resurrected some time after we die and continue to live forever.

This concept is taught by the LDS church, a link is provided in the source list to study it more if you really care.

Because death is something we don't understand, and therefore fear. Frankly, the idea of living in heaven forever is a little boring to me.
