It goes back to the whole social class SNOB issue in my opinion.
Snobby people don't socialize with those they consider beneath them. So in some way I believe when quiet people aren't being talkative people assume it's because they think they're better than them. Which in turn leads to hard feelings.
People used to not like me because I was quiet and shy. I've been told by people they thought I was stuck up because of that.
Once they got to know me I opened up and would clown around with them and that was the first thing they'd confide in me.

Because it has been trained in our culture that outgoing people are easy going and quiet people are either weird or uptight.
How many shows have you seen that depict a quiet hero that doesn't make their move 'til the end? Not that many.
