In my area the preference is for female Malinois, but the good ones are usually not working because they are used for breeding. Males are usually bigger, but they are not necessarily stronger. I have never met a better security/law enforcement dog than a female Malinois. They will bite and hang on.
I have had both male and female Malinois, and I would rather use my female to guard and do protection work. She proved herself when someone broke into my house. I came home and found my front door open and my female holding a piece of bloody blue jeans. The guy broke in and she crept up behind him and grabbed hold of his leg, and he was actually caught because he had to go to the hospital to get stitches. At that time, she had no formal training.
Also to FLOOP: Malinois are not a mixed breed, they are actually an older breed than German Shepherds and were used in the creation of German Shepherds. Law Enforcement companies have switch to them because of their higher drive and intensity. Plus, they are slightly smaller, which makes them easier to carry if need be, and they also are not prone to as many health problems and the German Shepherds.

The german Shepard club has a NATIONAL contest every year for protection dogs (shchuzhund). It takes dog without regard for sex - the majority of the winners have been female......
PS yes a large number of police & security dogs are now the faster lighter Belgian Malois - which is a pure bred

the same eason why there is more male cops than female cops...think about it...in a male dog there is more drive and aggression for that line of work...they are larger stronger ...one person said the protection dogs are mixes!!!what a moron i was a k9 trainer for 11 years and they are the exact breed of the dog...whether it is a german shepard or dobie...ext..females can be great dogs for protection and can be better...males(when brought to the attention of a duty are generally more dominating for the job) but i your looking for protection and you want a female protective by nature breed then youll be fine...a female could do alot of damage and think more in motherly terms..

you are mistaken. female dogs work just as well as male. i know quite a few female service dogs. and i am speaking of protection dogs. the reason for more males is because we think a male dog is more aggressive, so more people will get a male dog for protection before a female. any dog will do to it's ability what it has been trained to do. and protection is just a dog's nature wether male or female.

not all k-9 dogs are male, k-9 is a teaching program not a breed of dog for protection, certain breeds do better for k-9 training, just my opinion, the females are just as good, I know a K-9 cop dog it is a female.

Your wrong. They do use them . Our local PD Have all females, They are easier to train and more protective in most case. They can also be calmer. It is mostly a matter of what the officer wants.

They do not refuse to use female K9's. Lots of departments use them as well as males.
The department I worked in started out with a female and 2 males.
They all worked equally well.

most are a little bigger/stronger thats it, but they use females also. The breed they use isn't even a real german shepard its a mixed special breed for speed light weight so they can hop fences and run faster.

It could be that they are more aggressive, but it probably is becuase of behavioral differences, it might be easyer to train a male dog, or it might be more loyal...
