Children that age blame themselves when a parent fails them. Tell your girls that their mom loves them, and she left because she has problems, not because there is something wrong with them. Tell them that you hope one day mom will get over her problems and be in their life all the time. Make sure they know that they are good girls and good daughters, and you are proud to be their dad and their mom is proud to be their mom.

I agree with Gina to a point. They are probably wondering what the heck is going on, though. And they do deserve an answer. I would simply tell them, Mommy loves them but she is having some problems she needs to deal with on her own right now, and she thought it would be better for you if she worked things out by herself. DO NOT bring up the word "abandoned" even if their mother is a total schmuck, which it sounds like she is. No sense in screwing up their world just because Mommy is a selfish idiot. Then, go ahead and get full custody and DO NOT take this woman back again. You need to be both Mom and Dad to those girls. They can not afford to lose you. Hang in there and be there for them. Just don't bad mouth their mom in front of them, ever, or you will make them feel bad about themselves. Good luck!!

I agree with Gina, beacuse it happened to me. My ex ran into her old abusive boyfriend and said see ya, well I got full and sole custody of my daughters (they were 9 & 11 at the time) her wages have been garnished, and my girls are 15 & 17 now, and never better. I have not, will not and could not give up on "my" girls, there are all I have here, and they at many times drive me crazy, but I would not want it any other way and I Thank God they are here with me.

You say nothing to that young of a child or children and then you go get custody and then you get child support and then you better your life and be a very happy man for even having your daughters in your life ( Men can do it just as woman can)

explain to them that their mom loved them but that you two had differences or explain whatever the reasons were that she left, and tell them that your always going to be there for them, you have to reassure them on that alot. You have to spend time with them and listen to how they feel now without their mom.
