If they are living in your home and you are "parenting" them... then it's important that you be a "whole" parent.. including fun, games, sports, sickness, food-fights, laughter, vacations, and yes, discipline. Probably a good idea to make sure you and your spouse are on the same page with regard to what's appropriate discipline, and what types of consequences you will TOGETHER impose... but it's absolutely necessary that you take on the full job of "parenting". If you don't, the children will have no idea what it means to live in a home with respect, what parental roles should be (or can be)...

My step father( God rest his soul) was the only father I knew, I was 3 months old when my mother married him. He used to spank me when I was young and my mother would get mad but he told her one day" How do you ever expect me to love and treat her as my child if you will not let me correct her" I don't know why I remember this but I do, from that point on he spanked me, praised me, loved me and was the best father a girl could ask for. I miss daddy and mama very much. I hope that this stepfather will be like mine because he WAS my father.

Check out Parenting with Love and Logic. It have great simple tool to use when dealing with kids. I would also redirect to words from "discipline" to "guiding".

It depends on the relationship one has. I had a great relationship with my stepfather, I do not even consider him a stepfather. He is like dad #2. If the bio-father isnt around, the stepfather takes full "dad" dicipline rights, if he is around, leave it up to mom and "dad", but like I said its all different.

My daughter loves her step-father. (Now my husband) He always diisciplined her and no one got mad or threatened to call CPS. She was never resentful toward him.

No one disciplines my kids but me. If someone else tried, I'd be all up their ***.
