Depends on the source and the numbers of channels. LPCM is uncompressed and DD is compressed. At the end of the audio path, even DD has to be uncompressed and converted to LPCM so the signal can be fed to a Digital to analog converter.
So 5.1 DD will sound better than 2-channel LPCM (extra channels)
However, if the recording was in multi-channel LPCM, provided you can actually tell the difference, that should sound better than 5.1 DD

This is actually what makes BLU-RAY and HD-DVD worth the upgrade from DVD.

"Dolby Digital" and "DTS" are COMPRESSED...To make all 5 audio channels of a movie fit on a DVD, the studios REMOVE quite a bit of the sound information.

The "LPCM 5.1" (Blu-ray) or "DolbyTrueHD" (HD-DVD) are 100% COMPLETELY UNCOMPRESSED...This means for the FIRST time ever you can listen to movies EXACTLY the way they were recorded in the studio.

Uncompressed sound offers the CLARITY of a CD and the WARMTH a record player...It's not so much the individual sound effects being better as it is the sound BETWEEN the effects.

You must hook up you Blu-ray (or HD-DVD) player to your home theater with 6 (six) RCA cables...One for EACH of your speakers and sub...(sorry 6 and 7.1-ers...your CENTER REAR(S) won't work)...The FIBER OPTIC or DIGITAL COAX connection will WATER DOWN the audio to "DTS".

Then you have switch the audio on the movie's menu from "Dolby Digital 5.1" to the "LPCM"...If your player's hooked up with the FIBER or COAX you will NOT notice a difference.

Leave BOTH connections (digital and 6-channel analog) hooked up and flip back and forth between the two...If you've changed the movie's menu to "LPCM" you'll DEFINITELY notice a major difference...The reason for HALF A DOZEN audio cables is that NO home theater receiver can decode UNCOMPRESSED audio at this point...(maybe next year)

LPCM sounds like a business or a highschool or somthing like that.
Dolby Digital 5.1 sounds like some hi-tech $hit (
