One meter is officially defined as:

in 1983 October 21 — the length as equal to the distance travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299 792 458 of a second.

Rscanner's answer is correct: 39.37 inches is close enough for most purposes.

All the other answers are wrong in some way or another, especially Paul's. It's not "a little less than 36 inches." It's more than 39 inches.

Why do people answer incorrectly on Y!A when the answer is specific and should be given only if the answerer knows it is correct? Is there just so much fluff in their heads that it has to come out somewhere, so it comes out here?

Arrrgh!

My apologies. Kari's answer is also correct. She thought outside the box, too. She's right: a meter is one meter long!

Hah-hah!

While Y!A can get you answers, right or wrong, you should always try to find the most authoritative source possible, which, for the US, is the National Institute of Standards and Technology:
http://physics.nist.gov/Pubs/SP811/appenB.html

SP811 is the official source of unit conversions between SI and US units. As indicated above, the foot is defined EXACTLY as 0.3048 of a meter, hence, an inch is EXACTLY 0.3048/12 of a meter.

1 meter long = 100.000 cm = 1000.000 mm
1 inch = 2.5400 cm long
1 foot = 33.33 cm long
so 1 meter long = 39.370037 inch
1 foot = 12.000 inch

this is about the lenghth .. if you need more converts there is many converting programms and i have one ..if you need it i am ready to send it to you.
