I am working on a research project (science fair project) on the effect of phosphate on the oxygen level in pond water. I need of course some background information and I was wondering what sort of info should i research or talk about to help me understand more about this and specific info dealing with this project. I would greatly appreciate anyone's help and possibly give me some sites that will enable me to understand more of this. I need some help as quickly as possible and I would greatly appreciate any of it!

Phosphate is a nutrient for plants. High levels of phosphate can cause an overgrowth of algae in ponds.

The rapid growth does cause a temporary rise in photosynthesis, but eventually, the plants die and decompose. This requires oxygen and will often deplete the oxygen in a pond.
