What kind of cds do I need to save files, pictures, or programs?

You are looking for blank cds. They will be labled CD-R and usually hold about 700mb. You will need a cd burner if you do not already have on one your computer.

You can also use DVDs if you have a DVD burner and they have about 4.7Gb of space.
