Deuteronomy 20:12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:
20:13 And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:
20:14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

So what was your question? Are you judging the generations
that were in the beginning of time to the generations of today?
Life was pretty hard back them--Kill or be killed. If you are
saying God was wrong to require this--You need to read the
whole thing. I believe the Lord was leading the Children of
Israel into Canaan which He had given them for their
possession. They were to enter in and take it by force.
One thing you might find interesting,. this same piece of
land is what the Jews are fighting for right now. Only the
acreage that God gave them was much larger than it is now.
That's the problem, the Jews believe that land is their
birth right. Of course the children of Islam believe
differently and there we have the paradox.

Yes. . . Why don't you put in the context?
Err. . . you are not sure? And post this to ask?
Ok. . . .this is probably one of the 2 incidents in the bible, and the bible does not suppot such act after that.
Those that were killed were evil, if you bother to go back to Genesis 15:16, their sin has yet reach it fullness. God had given them 400 yrs to repent, but they did not.
If u don't know, let me share, their evil include children sacrifice, temple prosititute etc. . . .
If God do not spare the Israelite when they sin, will God ever given them chance?
Dear friend, that same God is also giving u chance to change. repent and be saved. Don't be too hard untill u see His glory. . . Too late.

Yes, the Bible is violent and contradicting. You will probably get a million replies from fundamentalists saying how that applies to us in some way. People who take the Bible literally will stretch and skew the meaning of the words to fit, like the elasticity of the US Constitution.
Thing is, that the Bible is a mixture of ideas, truths, parable, and religious philosophy. But this passage in Deuteronomy might be taken out of context, and I think it says of how to deal with one's enemies.

Arise from your seated position and proceed thee nigh to the land of the Golden Arches.
Once there, order unto thine self two all beef patties,
special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a seseme bun.
And there you be filled, in my name.
