One of the ingredients is coca leaves. Originally fresh coca leaves were used which meant that coke did contain cocaine. Sometime about 1903, they started to use spent coca leaves instead of fresh. Spent leaves are what is left after the cocaine has been extracted for other uses. So, although coca leaves are still used, there is no cocaine in coke.

It was a wonder drug of the day. Used it for toothaches, stomach complaints, headaches, menstrual cramps, fatigue, and mental agility, just to name a few of its uses. Was even given to black dock workers in the South to help them to work faster--they had "cocaine breaks" instead of coffee breaks! It was originally put in a syrup by the Coca Cola inventor as a headache remedy, and sold in one-oz shots. Cocaine wasn't considered a problem until several yrs after it was introduced, when people started killing for the stuff.

"One of the reasons why it was used in soft drinks? So people drinking to soda would become addicted to it and therefore buy more. (Hmm... maybe why they use caffeine in them today)."
