sure,.. if you are worried about others finding them via the internet simply store them on a exernal hard drive and just turn it off when you don't need it. It will no longer be accessible until you turn it back on and your computer will not need it on to run

two things to keep in mind,.

1) Keep a separate backup of those documents since, if you lose them you may no longer be able to replace them

2) If they are confidential, consider applying an encryption to the entire hard disk. This is a very simple process. Try PGP encryption

nothing is wrong in scaning your documents,i do this every day just make sure that there are not any spyware,adware,and other infections! so don't stop! go to internet options and veiw the files and clean them out, that way your computer will still run better too! hope this has helped you!
