I was standing totally wet having just risen from the watery grave of baptism.

Acts 2:38
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
NIV

Many are confused about the gift of the Holy Spirit. There is the indwelling which we are promised in Acts 2:38 as a result of baptism and the forgiveness of sins. Scripture speaks of a miraculous indwelling of the Spirit also. Such as when the Spirit descended upon the gentiles to show that the Word had been sent to them. If you will notice, though, in no case where a miraculous indwelling occurred is it stated that the indwelling was saving in nature.

In fact, Peter and the Jews with him recognized that this indwelling was a sign that the Word had been sent to the Jews so they reasoned if God has shown that the Gentiles are acceptable for salvation how can we stand in the way of God's will. So he had them all baptized immediately for the remission of their sins. At that time, the Gentiles were given the non miraculous saving indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 10:44-48
4 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.

45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.

46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,

47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have."

48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

I was in my living room struggling with drug addiction. I was having the dt's from an all night binging on cocaine when I saw a religious program on the TV. The guy in the show said that Jesus saves. Since I was on the brink of suicide and desperate I opened pleaded to God to remove this pain from my body. Sure enough the relief was immediate. It started as a tingling sensation that energized me. Then my mind became purged of negativity and I saw the world from a positive perspective. That very day I learned what it was like to be alive and I havent stopped since.

God Bless You.

If by "received the Holy Ghost" you mean, "have a very spiritual experience" ...then I had that sitting in the Bleachers at a school prep-rally while contemplating suicide.

I was on Yahoo Answers, in the Religion and Spirituality section. However, somehow, my rational brain resisted the temptation to follow the sheep.

So- I'm OK now.
