~When the Cherokee stole the concept of the medicine wheel from the Souix, the changed the colors to avoid copywrite infringement problems, as suggested to them by the Gataka, whose own medicine wheel was actually not a wheel, but a block. Someplace along the way, the Kiowa convinced them that black should represent not only death but eternal life and prosperity. After the Trail of Tears, they realized the wheel didn't work, and black reverted back to not death but extinction. Then they found the oil in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Today, the predominant significance of black is once again prosperity.
