I think it is great that you want to adopt the baby. I think that you can certainly do that! Look at Rosie O'Donnel, i think she and her partner have a few kids together. The father is probably the only one who can make things tough. If he really wants nothing to do with the baby, make sure your girlfriend doesn't put his name on the birth certificate. If he is on there, you would have to go through him to adopt the baby too.
definitely contact an adoption lawyer in your state ASAP. most will talk to you free, and they can give you all the info you need.
congrats to you both, and enjoy your new child!

The answer to this will depend on where you live - adoptions law varies from state to state. While you are getting things sorted out, you should also determine what, if any, relationship the father will have with the baby. If he wants to give up his parental rights, get a lawyer and make sure it's all legally recognized. If he gives up his rights he'll have no obligation to support the child in any way. On the other hand, it will minimize the risk of him suddenly popping up and challenging you two for custody of the child. Good luck!

Laws in states vary but I think I am safe saying that you are in an inconveniently biased system. Here's the thing... If you can get a legally recognized marriage (I'm not sure how Mass. is coming on this) a lot of states have a legal presumption that a child born within wedlock is the husband's. It is almost always a challengable presumption but I'm thinking that a crafty lawyer may find this an interesting jumping off point.
Sorry I can't be much help. Good luck.

We have friends that both have had a baby, artificially insiminated by the same donor. Each one has adopted the others child. Not only to be more a part of that childs life, but to be legally responsable in case something happened to the other party. You will have to be thoroughly investigated by child welfare services, as well as they will investigate your friends that will be around the baby. What I think is also special, they took both of the names and combined them to come up with the babies first name, such as Sue and Callie, named their girl Sallie!! Congrats on being a new mommy. I know Canada just passed a law where there can be two mother's on the birth certificate. In the states it's more complicated. I would suggest talking to a lawyer.

I'm not sure if you can legally adopt the baby. Try googling it (yeah, I know), but it's worth a try!
My sister in law is lesbian and trying to find this out too.
If you find any info could you pass it along?
Good luck!

You would need to check with a legal office on your state's adoption procedures to lesbian couples. Good luck!!!

Depends on where you live.
Most places: no. You can't adopt. It is a sad fact. There are a few states that allow it, however.
