You need to set up your DVD player to output in widescreen. Go into the DVD player menu/setup and there should be an option to change to output from letterbox to widescreen.
Also, make sure you are playing widescreen rather than full screen DVD's. Many movies come in both formats.
Some DVD players and TV's have a zoom function to crop out the black bars, but it tends to pixelate the screen because you are enlarging the picture.

You do mean 14:9 correct? If so this is not a widely used format at all. Most DVDs and TV are shot in 4:3 or 16:9. The other formats are like 1.85 and 2.35 (film formats) and your 14:9. What brand/model do you have? How long ago did you buy it? Can you return it?

On my remote it has a pix control button. And on it I have a choice between normal, full, zoom 1 and zoom 2. Mine is only a 32" wide screen. I'm surprised yours doesn't have more options? Have you read the manual for it? I'd play around with the buttons more. That is what I have been doing. Surprising what you can discover about your tv that way!

The TV is scaling correctly, movies are allot of time filmed in a wider format than 16:9, some are, but most are wider actually. enjoy the films, now, at least in a wide screen format, the TV is doing all it is capable of.

Wide screen movies are formatted in several sizes. If you are watching a movie that is not formatted for the size of your wide screen than you will see black bars. Is that confusing or what??? LOL
If you don't like the black bars then zoom the picture. However you'll loose part of it when you do that.

Im assuming you mean 16:9, but I dont think theres anyway to fix this other than using the "zoom" or "size" buttons, but be sure to try both the DVD player and TV remotes.
