How small is small? There are many breeds to chose from. Toy or minature poodle, Shitzu, Chiwawa, Silky, Yorkie and and many more along this line. The best best is to decide if you want an animal that can run and play outside with children or be an inside pet. There are so many breeds that have very different breeding background that you must be aware of. For example the poodle was breed as a working wet water retreiver so expect all poodles to want a job of some sort pugs were breed as a sport lap dog you figure it out.

Check out the toy breeds, they start small and stay small. Most end up anywhere from 5-20 pounds.
If you go to akc.org you can see photos of the toy group and information is easily accessed on breed descriptions. You can also find dog books at your library with pictures of the different breeds. But, all dogs are feisty and jump a lot as puppies. They don't settle down until at least 1 year old.
Stay away from terriers, they are a feisty group and not for someone looking for a mellow dog.

There are too many different breeds out there to suggest one. I'd suggest checking out some sites online about small dog breeds. That way you can look up what they will look like and specific traits. Ive always had large dogs and found smaller dogs cute but very yappy and they can have major health problems. Definitly check out some sites online, talk to a local vetrenarian for some info they might be helpful.

Obviously you have the internet so start web searching. Get information on several breeds and pick the one that has the characteristics that will fit your family. There are also good books out there for ppl who need help choosing the right puppies. Call a vet clinic or the shelter....these places know ALL of the breeds. Research !!!!

I have a shih tzu and he is absolutely wonderful with my kids. When I brought my middle son home from the hospital after he was born my dog had to sniff him over and everytime he would start crying my dog was right by his side as if he were gonna take care of him himself. He is the exact same way with my new baby that is 3 months old. He is the best dog that i've ever had.

actually, the temperament of your chihuahua can be affected by the way you treat it in its first months with you. I said chihuahua because i automatically assumed you would want a dog breed that is NATURALLY small as opposed to the inbreeding that takes place with so many other breeds. BTW. if its a miniature, and its not a chihuahua it has been inbred, and the likelyhood of serious illnesses or disorders almost doubles.

There are several toy size dogs that you can get such as a Bichon frise (http://www.akc.org/breeds/bichon_frise/index.cfm), toy poodle, pomerian, coton de tulear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coton_de_Tulear).

Here is a link to AKC that has a list of various toy size dogs. http://www.akc.org/breeds/toy_group.cfm

As far has being jumpy and fiesty, it depends on how much time to spend training the dog or having the dog trained to be obiedent. Good luck finding the right dog for your family. Also consider looking into dog rescues for your pet.
