it sounds to me like your mom has a hietal hernia.....which is in her throat and it will block your passage and make you vomit after eating or when drinking or taking meds...she should go to the doctor asap......it can turn into a bad esaphus....or she might have acid reflux....

I have GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and it causes me to have a tight feeling in my throat. GERD is a result of acid from the stomach being allowed to enter back up into the esophagus. I have also experienced problems with swallowing small pills and even rice. (I even had to pull off the road because I couldn't breath) I have to take a daily medication that is called a proton pump inhibitor. It reduces the amount of acid in the stomach and therefore, isn't allowed into the esophagus. GERD left undiagnosed and untreated, as I have been told, could lead to Barrett's Esophagus, or a precancerous condition. There are other symptoms that I experience such as, pain in my chest, ribs, and heartburn. She can simply talk to her family doctor and he can help her decide if she needs to see a specialist. Good luck with Mom let her know it's not that scary once you understand what you can do to help eliminate the acid. Stress and foods/drinks all affect GERD. Once she helps with some modifications, she could be feeling great in no time!

without looking at her throat or possibly doing a throat culture, nothing can be for certain
there are many many possiblilties for a sore throat, irritation from the pills, acid reflux burning her esophagus, even stds in the throat
this is only a few and it could be a very serious problem, even worse that it has already become. there is no reason not to see a doctor as soon as possible
good luck

Get your mom to an ENT ASAP! (ear, nose and throat doctor). Painful swallowing (odynophagia) should ALWAYS be checked out, as it can be due to things which are much worse than GERD.

There isnt enough information provided to analyze what it could be.
Could you please ask your mom the following questions:
Has she suffered from alot of heart burn or does acid build up in her stomach causing her pain.
Does your mother smoke or has she before? If she did smoke, how many packs a day and for how long did she smoke.
Please post the answers to the questions and perhaps I might be able to assist you.

My grandmother and my father and myself all have a genetic problem, which constricts the esophagus, we have to have it stretched occasionally which helps for about a year.
They simply put you in twilight, then put a tube in your esophogas, and fill it with air, stretching the esophagus out.

sounds like her esophagus is spasming. she may have corrosive esophageal disease. does she have heartburn or indigestion often? she really needs to see a doctor. if you were having the same problem she would take you so she needs to apply the same logic towards herself.
