You can convert it - but you'll pay for the conversion.

You can just spend your greenbacks, and save the conversion.

Same thing in Mexico too.


Why can't Canadians and Mexicans spend their currency in the US? What is NAFTA afterall?

I'm a Canadian who regularly goes south to the US, and has to deal with visitors to Canada, who are unprepared with Cdn. cash.

I need to address a few concerns, based on my experiences and what I've read in other 'answers'.

1) There are NOT currency exchange stations at all Canada/US border crossings. (This is more of a European thing)

2) There are exchanges facilities in INTERNATIONAL airports, but if you fly into a smaller, regional airport you will be out of luck.

3) Most Canadian businesses will accept US paper money and pay a fair exchange rate. They will NOT accept American coins, as our banks will not accept them. Paper money only folks,... plus, that is the same treatment that we receive when we visit the US.

5) Visa or Mastercard are easily accepted, and you will find your next statement will list your Canadian purchase price, the exchange rate, and the final US $ amount you owe to your credit card company. This is by far the easiest for large purchases.

6) The closer (physically) you are to the border, the more likely that you will be able to use US cash.

7) Your bank might not have Canadian cash on hand, but will be able to order it in. Place your order a couple of weeks ahead of your travels, and they should be able to have it for you.

8) TRAVELLERS CHEQUES!!!!! order them in Canadian funds - and you will receive change in Canadian funds..... I can't count how many times Americans have expected to cash a $20 travellers cheque for a $2 item, and want American cash back..... we simply don't keep it in our registers.

As to why you can't use American cash in Canada and Mexico..... it's simple! You are not in America - you are in Canada or Mexico, and they are unique, separate countries.

Yep, you can go to your bank and exchange it. Right now the exchange rate isn;'t too bad. You can also exchange at the border (most large border stations have an exchange area just outside it .. but the rate is poorer). You can also go to banks within Canada.

Here is a suggestion from experience though. You will get the best exchange rate if you use a debit card. Carry enough Canadian currency for cab fare, misc. items, a meal, or whatever else you might want, but larger purchases, restuarant meals, hotels, and things like that use your debit card if you have one.

Most places will take the American money and give you the going exchange rate. But if you want, walk into any bank and have them exchange it for you. If you're going to Toronto, there's a bank on almost every corner.

You'll get the best exchange rate by withdrawing money from your U.S. checking account at an ATM in Canada. You'll receive the equivalent in Canadian currency. You might have to know if your ATM card works on the Cirrus or Plus system. You will need a four digit NUMERICAL pin number.

You can also use most bank cards at ATM machines in Canada to take out Canadian funds from American bank accounts. Most shopping malls have currency exhange kiosks also. Just be aware of the exchange fees at some of the places you go to. If you just use your bank/debit card at the ATM or directly at the store/etc. your bank will just charge you the exchange fee on your account.

U can Exchange it at airport, if coming by road after entering Canada u will see few banks offering exchange.Ohterwise u can exchange it in the city.last thing US $ is largely accepted in the market as well exchage rate 1= 1.10 have a nice trip

All along the border they have currency exchange stations. Most business'es along the border also accept US currency, although they charge a certain percent to exchange it for you. The best way is to use your Visa Or Mastercard for purchases there. The cards do all the exchange work for you, and you get billed in nice, old fashioned US currency, without a fee.
