They detected by ultrasound that my son only had 1 kidney, and what was left of the other one was cystic, after he was born the other one disappeared. Just wondering how common this is, and if anyone else has had a child with the same problem.

My daughter has two, but on an early ultrasound we found it had mulitple cysts on her left kidney. We had to see a Renal speacilist while I was still preganant. He said it wasnt that common but it does happen. We had to get an ultrasound once she was a month old to see if the cysts were growing or not. I'm not really sure what the result of that ultrasound was as the technician and Dr didnt say anything to me ( they just whispered) and then they didnt send the result to the speacilist.
She's almost 4 now and has had two more ultrasounds. The second last one she had at about 1 & 1/2 and it was found that she didnt have any renal tissue left. So I took the results back to my Dr as my speacilist has retired, thankfully my Dr was able to get a hold of the speacilist and relay the results to him ( I thought it was sweet that he remembered us) and he said to get her blood pressure checked every 6 months and get another ultrasound at the end of the year.
With the last ultrasound I made them check her right kidney as well just to make sure it was fine. ( It was)
I dont really know whats going on as I'm still yet to see some type of speacilist to explain it to me.
It's very worrying for me as when I look at the cysts they look huge, but I dont have any medical training so I cant really judge.

I'm not sure if my daughter is the same as your son. But it sounds sorta the same I think.
Its called mylticystic kidney or dysplastic kidney. It''s been referred to as both.
I hope this helped you. And I wish your son good health.

my youngest son[now 16] was born with one kidney and the only way we found out about it, was he was having bad back pain
when he was 13 and we took him to the hospital and they did testing and the pain was caused by kidney stones which he had to have removed .he still has 3 small stones but there are not causing any problems as of yet..he is not allowed to do any contact sports or get hit in the side where his kidney is
do not let any one do a die x-ray test on your son ,because the die can damage his kidney and he does not have a spare .
like most people do..
