There is a cure. And if you have a 1-year old baby with meningitis he or she would need massive amounts of strong antibiotics targeted to the disease within 5-7 days of contracting the virus or their brain turns to mush. Worse than naegleria.

Read this medical journal article for information on the survival rate: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11207221&dopt=Abstract

Then you know infants can be "cured" With viral only the symptoms can be treated, antibiotics don't work against it. The infant's immune system strength would determine survival. Bacterial is more dangerous and faster moving. Survival rates are higher with viral than bacterial (also depends on the specific "bug" causing the infection) In certain parts of the world, mortality rate (death rate) is high because they can't be treated or can't afford it.

You don't die from Viral Meningitus. You can die from Bacterial meningitus. The virus just has to run it's course. The Bacteria attackes the body. To see Viral in a 1 year old would be horrific. my son had it when he was four. Spinal taps, the massive headaches, stiff neck, it's very terrible.
