For everyday use a Futon is way better because they usually have a thicker mattress that doubles as a chair , a sofa bed has a way thinner mattress because it has to be folded up into the sofa , it won't be as comfortable .

Futon is much more comfortable for sleeping, but get a Japanese futon. It has a foam base with a separate layer of cotton batten (about 2" thick). The American futons tend to be the cotton only, and this quickly compresses and gets painful.
The Japanese futons tend to remain open (flat) and may not fit in with decor, and the American ones tend to be repositioned into a chair or couch.
Sofabeds only have a thin mattress, so you feel every spring that supports them.

I've had both. I found the Futon to be more comfortable. The sofabed "mattress" is kind of like sleeping on a couple of layers of cardboard covered with a thin padding. You should lay down on each one when deciding which one you prefer.

Comfort is futon; convenient is a sofabed because it does not look like a fold-up bed like a futon does.

If they haven't solved the issue with the support bar in the middle of the sofa bed, go with the futon! Sofa bed mattresses are usually just too skinny too, bar or no bar, but it does make up into a neater package than a futon. Everyday sleeping.....futon.

Sofabed. Better in all ways. ...Unless it's ugly as hell.
