no. The more you try to think of nothing the more you think of. If you try not to think and try to imagine a blank peice of paper (so there is no picture of something) then you are still thinking of paper. The mind has electricity constantly flowing through it. Once it stops you are considered brain dead. we are always thinking of something

Absolutely, when the brain is in the input mode (more common in children) it is learning, experiencing . . . it is not forming info for output , just learning.
Also, after a busy period, the brain can just rest (pre REM sleep - semi conscious / resting)
When people get in the output mode, then the thinking thing is running full steam and that is when kids often do not shuttt up !
( adults can get introspective or be yakky at this time)

Yes it is possible. I have done that many times. I will just sit and nothing seems to be in my mind at all. I get asked "What am I thinking about?" I answer, "absolutely nothing" because i am not thinking of anything. Just staring off into space.

for comatose people, maybe. doctors still aren't positive. if you believe a person who is brain dead is still alive, the answer is yes as well.

no otherwise its not possible. yuor brain never shuts off. even when you sleep, parts of it stay on- including the part that thinks.

With meditation it is possible to block out thoughts and think of nothing, I have never tried it, I probably should look into it though.

it's not really possible to be thinking nothing, that's just a phrase/word we use when we aren't really thinking of anything in particular or anything important. explain to your son that you weren't really thinking of important stuff. that you're always thinking about something and that your mind can never really be blank. there's always something going through your head even if you don't pay attention to it. tell him that when you think of "nothing" you're just ignoring your thoughts. or the next time he asks what you're thinking, instead of saying "nothing" tell him you're thinking of how much you love him.

Isn't that the idea of deep meditation? To eliminate the mind of any thought?? Like the Buddhist monks practice...

Yogis can do it.
My BF kind of can, or can, actually. He tried to describe it to me. He goes into a place of peace, and somewhere inside of him, he has to decide when to sanp out of it. But it's not a word-thought, it's something deeper than that.

you know, i want to know the same thing! i always try to think about nothing, but end up doing it anyways. i'm not sure. i think the only way we can "not think" is when we are in really really deep meditation

It is just natural to think about thinks, sometimes we don't realize we are dougn it, my 5 year old has just realized her brain "talkes" to her, not in a crazy way but just thinking.
