My son has an x-long twin, he has regular length blankets and have never complained about them being too short.
If you go to Bed, Bath and Beyond they can help you there. X-long sheets are pretty much a back to school thing, so make sure you get 2 sets.
Also, If I remember correctly, when it is back to school time, they have a free checklist of recommendations for dorm living.
ASk a few people for gift certificates from there for graduation. Also, check with the dorm, see what appliances they allow in your room for cooking. My son is in the Navy, and is only allowed a refrigerator, micorwave and coffee maker. He bought this thing called Pasta express that he loves, you just put hot water in it to cook pasta and hot dogs and things. This way he can make Mac and cheese when he wants.

If you like to tuck the blanket under your chin, spring for the extra long size. LandsEnd blankets come extra long to start, but they are expensive. Otherwise, the regular length will be OK, just skimpy at the bottom and top. Have you considered a duvet cover? If they weren't such a pain to put back on, they eliminate the need for top sheet and bedspread.

Why don't you wait until you visit the dorm to buy the blanket, or to see what you're going to do? You can measure the bed then. Or, if you know anyone at the college, you might ask them. If all else fails, bring a blanket and then when you get there, see if you need to buy a different one.
God bless.

I think you'll need the XL. You can get them at JCPenneys (jcp.com) and I know walmart has them in the fall.
