There are different degrees of sin in these new covenant times.
St. John expained it like this:
1Jo 5:16 He that knoweth his brother to sin a sin which is not to death, let him ask: and life shall be given to him who sinneth not to death. There is a sin unto death. For that I say not that any man ask.
1Jo 5:17 All iniquity is sin. And there is a sin unto death.
Under the old law, if you broke it even a little bit, you broke all of it, and you were condemned, so there was no distinction as to sin.
It doesn't work that way under the new and better covenant that operates under grace, not law.
Some sins are minor, some major.
Some act to separate us from God. Some don't.
That's what St. John was pointing out.

Before you are "saved" the degree of sin does not really matter because without salvation you are going to hell.
However after you are "saved" the degree of sin does matter. It can hurt you relationship with God a little or totally break off the relationship.
Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.
A mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.
Most of the sins we commit are venial sins. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.
However consistent unrepentant venial sins can slowly destroy your relationship with God and become mortal sin.
With love in Christ.

If you believe the Bible, sin is sin, and any sin without repentance is enough sin to send you to hell.
It's human nature to want to be better, or feel that you are better, than someone else. I guess it's a way to ease your conscience. I don't know how else to explain that.

This parable isn't about judging sin yet an body of concepts. The sinner had a repentant body of concepts, which skill he grow to be sorry for what he did and grow to be asking God's forgiveness. He grow to be humble. The publican grow to be proud and judgmental, no longer to point self-righteous. for the period of his prayer, he grow to be committing the sin of pride. Psalm 51 is a psalm of repentance. observe verses 15-17 Psalm 51:15-17 New global version (NIV) God the Holy Spirit certainly classes all believers into religious truth even as they yield to Him. now and again, He works promptly, in my opinion, even as different circumstances, He works by skill of messengers or different skill like certain scriptures. 15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 you do not have relaxing with sacrifice, or i'd deliver it; you do not teach pride in burnt options. 17 My sacrifice, O God, is a damaged spirit; a damaged and contrite heart you, God, gained't despise. that is an body of concepts it truly is pleasing to God.

Stealing is wrong, no question. If I take ten dollars from some big bank vs taking ten dollars from some poor widow and that was all she had. Which sin is worse? The latter of course.

Sin is sin in God's sight. He does not put degrees on sin, man does.

Sin is sin. We are all born into sin. Jesus died for our sins so we may have the gift of salvation and life eternal.

Jesus said some sins were worse than others:
Jhn 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power [at all] against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
