ok i remember you from last night, so no nasty answer from me. sounds like she is close. the temp and everything is right. just keep an eye on her and if she's been activly pushing for more than an hour you're going to need to call an er vet. find their number now so you'll have it handy if you should need it in a rush. you can also call them if you're concerned in anyway. but i would say you're going to have pups within the next 24 hours. just make sure mom has an area to have them in, and try not to stare at her too often. remember a watched pot never boils. lol. if she's not cleaning the babies or doing anything with them you are going to have to do this. you should call your local er vet and tell them what's going on and they can prepare you for what to watch for exactly so you'll know if there is a problem. good luck. and i hope you find wonderful homes for these little ones.
and as for the adding or taking away degree, as long as you took the temp rectally which is the only real way to take it in a dog then that's the temp. dog's normally have a temp between 100.5-102.5. and labor is soon after their temp drops to around 99. it's not like a human baby where you have to add degrees depending on where you took the temp.

Gosh, you poor thing, you really got hit with these answers. People don't understand that you're here for help, not to get chewed out. Anyway, listen to iluvmyfrenchbulldogs and cagney. Just ignore the jerks. Good for you for not turning the dog away when she needed help. This is how my family ended up with our first cats, by taking in a very pregnant stray. We kept two kittens and took mama and the rest of the babies to a no-kill shelter (just didn't have room for eight cats!)
It sounds like the pups are due any time now so get ready! Here are some guidelines: active labor can take 20 min to an hour per puppy. Some dams take a 'break' after a few pups but before they are all whelped. It can take 24 hours or so for all the pups to be delivered but usually takes much less time. Many pups may be born breech, or hindquarters first, that's normal. A greenish-black discharge is normal during whelping.
Some signs to watch for: half-hour of strong contractions with no puppy, weak contractions for 2 hours with no puppy, bleeding, or the dam is in obvious pain. Call a vet immediately.
After the pups are born, mama will usually try to eat the placenta and break the cord, that's ok but it is better for you to do that as some dams can injure the pups accidently by biting the cord too close to the pups' belly. The dam will have a bloody discharge for up to 8-10 weeks after whelping and that is perfectly normal. If the pups are actively nursing and gaining weight they're fine. If you see anything like a foul-smelling or green discharge from her vulva, constantly crying pups or unthrifty (not gaining weight, etc) pups, contact a vet immediately.
Good luck and enjoy the fun, even though it is a bunch of work!

63 days from the day she was bred. The temp is only accurate when it is taken consistently, like in the a.m. before she gets up, and even then it can be easy to miss a temp drop. Being she is lactating, it probably won't be long. I hope you have done some reading about whelping puppies and have your supplies/whelping box ready.
When she was bred, why didn't you take her in for a spay? Why would you leave a bit ch in season alone in the yard? We don't really need any more unwanted puppies, the shelters are already full of accidental breedings.
Hey! The two that call everyone else idiots and dummies are the ones who don't get it! LOL!
Vanessa - She said a week after they got her. NOT last week!
Troll - She said 98.7, NOT 89.7 Temps often drop a degree or two, 12 - 24 hours before whelping.
I agree with their comments about idiots though. LOL!!!

Hi Lil, Your pet is probably going to start labor. You need to fix a large box with news paper all inside the box. Show her the box,and see if she will lay in it.When she becomes very restless, and starts arranging the news paper, watch here closely. She will be in labor, and should have her first pup in about 3 hours. If for some reason she doesn't have the first pup in 3 hours that's okay.It could take up to 6 hours.Make sure that the house is calm, and quiet, this way she will have an easier time. Congrats grandma, and your daughter for finding this sweet pet. A Friend.

She should start delivering puppies in the next 24 hours. There temp should drop below 99 and stay there about 12-24 hours before they go into labor. She will probably have them at about 3 am, because it seems like the always do :) If she seems to be actively pushing and does not deliver a puppy in an hour you will need to call a vet (but hopefully it will go well and you will not have to).
Good Luck with mom and the puppies!

Dogs generally are not taken to a vet to have their pups. They usually have them on their own. BUT, The temp you gave of 89.7 of not the proper temp for a healthy dog. It is way too cold. A healthy dogs temp is around 102-103 degrees.
What do you mean by adding or taking away a degree? That makes no sense.
Give her a box with towels or a blanket in it and have it in an open closet or secluded place and let her have her pups. Do let a vet know what is going on and listen to them above any goof that is giving you answers here. Yes me included.

Go to this website, www.debbiejensen.com
She is a Shih Tzu breeder and walks you through the whole whelping process. All dogs go through the same things. This is going to be a long process. Once she starts, you should stay with her during the delivery, in case there is a complication.
Good luck.

the people that answer you are dummies. if she only got pregnant a week ago, there is not way shes in labor unless she was already pregnant and didnt become that way from the dog who got in your backyard. give her some blankets and if shes not better soon take her to the vet. also, the normail pregnancy for a dog is 63 days, give or take a few. they can also have false pregnancy where they lactate but are not pregnant. hope this helps.
