My friends are going to have their first baby soon. I want to get them a great gift, something that they will actually need as new parents. Any ideas?

I grant that it wrecks the surprise. But I can't stand most of the baby junk on the market, and would way prefer somebody ask first. They may be dying for what I think of as "junk," too, of course. So my suggestion for a gift certificate to a top-notch European toystore, or one for a good kiddie bookstore, might not be so appreciated by somebody who wants a matching set of Disney-emblazoned plastic nursery decorations.

I also plan on adoring all friends/relatives who go in together on big gifts...

That said, I agree with the poster who said gift cards aren't thoughtless here. Just make it for a decent amount and a nearby store -- there's a bit of frustration with making a special trip to spend ten bucks at all times, and undoubtedly much more with a newborn around.

But if you're set on buying something, maybe, er, really nice slippers? Bathrobes? Something nice enough to answer the door in but easy to wash; no cashmere. So much time spent at home getting up half-awake, etc. It wouldn't be too hard to peek at coat and shoe sizes while visiting. Well, maybe not...

A Tassimo? http://www.tassimo.com/ I expect we'll want hot drinks; I do not expect to have much time to fuss with them. I realise it's not "cute," but I imagine it would be thoroughly appreciated.

This is generally considered a "lame gift," but if you put a card with it that explains it, it tends to go over pretty well. I usually get new parents a gift certificate to Target or some other 'everything' store. Everyone is going to get them diapers and baby clothes and all sorts of stuff, but at some point the baby is going to grow or they're going to need some obscure thing that no one anticipated, and so they have some money to go buy that. People sometimes see gift cards as thoughtless, but I think that in this situation, it's pretty thoughtful (and in most-I'm all for people choosing something they've been wanting). If you don't like that idea, ask the mom/dad if there's something they want/need.

OR check out these - http://www.bumboseat.com These are kind of like booster seats for very young kids. My niece is 3 months old and she AND her mom love it.

If you go to the Pampers website you can set up a delivery of diapers as many as your like, I would have been so happy with this, it is the thing that will cost new parents the most and will need them for at least the next two years.

We needed to buy so many batteries for all the stuff that we received for our first child.

If they are close friends, I would give them something inexpensive and personal accompanied with a generous gift card to a store that specializes in babies or a store (or website) that they frequent--oh and an assortment of batteries.

Do you have any idea what's on their wish list? How much are you willing to spend? As a mom of three kids, here are some things that you can consider....baby monitors, baby bouncer, play yard, baby carrier, cozy cuddle bag for the car seat so that the baby does not have to use a snowsuit, bassinet, diaper genie.....look at babycenter.com and see what they suggest.

Give them a gift certificate for a night of free babysitting. All new parents need some time away.

Get them a stereo for the baby's room....and CDs to play on it. Ones that both mom and dad will enjoy listening to with baby (or, better put, ones mom will like and seperate ones dad will like). Also....get some soothing baby CDs that have lullabyes and soothing sounds (like heartbeats, fetal sounds, ocean waves crashing)....TARGET sells a good one called Lifescape Lullabyes!

It sounds silly....but listening to music with baby is one of the BEST experiences I have had with my children. They loved it as newborns, infants, toddlers....and now as young chidren.

Just an idea.....
