I've house trained 2 dogs, both had it down pat in 10 days.
1st thing in the morning, take your puppy outside right way to the same spot.
Feed him twice a day, small amount. Let him have the food for 5-10 min. This will teach him to eat when the food is there. And also by schecduling when he eats, you can control better what comes out. If he's not finished in 10 min, take it away. He won't starve before he eats again, don't worry. But alway have water out. Take him out as often as you can during the day to the same spot.
Remember, take him out first thing in the morning 10 times in a row.
On the 11th morning go to the door and sit there with him. Let him show some sign of emotion before you open the door (barking, scratching, whimpering). That will teach him that he has to let you know he wants out. Keep that method up for as long as you can. And before you know it, he will have it down pat too.
Good luck.

Get some puppy training pads if your having a problem with it going in the house. You can then take a soiled one outside to get the scent outdoors. Also, you can take the pup out every 2 hours and be sure you watch for the tell tell signs it has to go out. Really intense sniffing, like it is on the trail of something. Also be sure you ask it if it has to "pottie" or "winkie" or whatever word you want to use when you take it out.

The best way is to take her outside on the grass as often as possible to get her into the habit. You will have accidents in the house but you should take her out right away, don't scold her for the accident. Tell her to go potty each time you take her out. It takes a while but she will eventually do great.

We always had great success with crate/box training. Dogs do not like to pee or poop where their food dishes are so they will whine to get out. Take them out of the crate/box and put them in the grass. It should only take a week or two. Our dogs rarely had an accident in the house using this method.
