My husband fell asleep the other night and has no movement in his wrist. he went to the emergency room and was diagnosed with radial arm palsy, also known as saturday night palsy.

has anyone had this before? does anyone know how long this will last? i keep reading up on it and it doesn't give a specified recovery time.

we're wondering how long he may be out of work.

please please only respond if you know anything about this or have had it before. it is a very serious situation and i'm not in the mood for the idiots on here.

saturday night palsy is a compression of a nerve that comes from the brachial plexus and runs into the upper limb. In a nerve compression injury, recovery time is based on the severity of compression. If your husband is a regular sized frame, and slept for a regular period of time than there is no reason he should not start to regain completely normal feeling in a few days (at the most).

It sounds like it may have been longer since you mention he has been out of work. Work with your husband to re-establish nerve conduction along that nerve by passively moving his wrist and arm, having him move the wrist/arm as much as he can, and working up to gentle resisted movement. If you demand that the message to move is sent along the nerve the nerve will more quickly recognize its job.

Good Luck.

"SNP" is a classic medical syndrome.
Please keep in mind that unless your husband was drunk with his arm wrapped around a lamppost with compression of the axillary bundle, there had better be a really good detailed HISTORY --what, how, where, when, why, lots of others-- and corroborating exam findings to fit the syndrome.

I once had a similar problem in my leg --yes, I was loaded-- and compressed the anterior peroneal nerve on my leg with foot drop --suprised the heck out of me!-- that lasted 3 months as I recall in total, with some recoveryh after the first 10 days. There are a lot of factors.

There are tests that can corroborate the clinical syndrome, if needed.

I have no doubt you are apprehensive.

As Mr. Reagan once said, "TRUST BUT VERIFY" then be patient.
