Don't ask a bridal shop - why would they send you to competition. They will recommend a good seamstress to make alternations, and this may be a good start, but they may not lead you to the best person to make the entire dress - especially if you are looking for more than just sewing a pattern that you find.

Ask ladies that work at the best fabric store in town for recommendations to start and use the old-fashioned Yellow Pages. Call and visit and ask to look at a portfolio of their work and recommendations.

What state do you live in? You could look local wedding dress shops and some times they have business cards of people that do that.

i have no idea if they have that there, but i think www.theknot.com has it all. so jus check out the site jus in case you haven't tried it yet. this website has become very useful in various and new wedding ideas when i was doing preparations for my own wedding. i really enjoyed it. so i thought maybe they could also have some suggestions on handmade wedding dresses and they have a long list of suppliers for each wedding need. good luck! =)
