Because he is a trouble maker his mail privileges have been taken away. He wants you to mail a letter for him.You figure it’s not such a big deal; besides, you know he could make your job easier by keeping the other inmates on the tier in line. What would you tell him?

I'd tell him "Sorry, buddy!". You are hired to be honest and follow rules! This guy doesn't know the meaning of following rules. That's why he's in there in the first place! He wouldn't be worth your job!

The guard should tell him no.

People are in prison for not following the rules.

If a guard fails to follow rules it sets a bad example.

Plus, it puts the guard on shakey ground in the future: just a letter this time, what's a few joints, or some other contraband.

If a guard needs to ask this question then they shouldn't be a guard.

I was a correctional specialist at the United states Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth,KS back in 1970-1971. What you are discribing could be a set up by the prison to catch rogue correctional officers. My advise is to adhere to the rules and regs. of the prison, and you will be respected by the prison hierarchy, and the prisoners as well. You start breaking rules, and it becomes a slippery path downwards for you.

I'd say no and write him up for trying to bribe/coerce me. If I lose my job my family does not eat. A CO owes an inmate nothing but basic human respect and should be firm, fair and impartial.

easy answer...i am a guard at a jail and the answer is always no. I never do favors for inmates because i could get fired for it. I'd rather put up with hell then get fired.

Guard should say NO.

Its against the rules, and once the guard does it - the inmate would have something to use to blackmail the guard.

I would want to see the contents of the letter first...if I'm going to risk it it better not be anything illegal or dangerous.I still feel weird though...I doubt I'd do it.
