I did have a horrible earache and went to the doctor. He told me that nothing was wrong with my ear, it was actually a throat infection. (My throat never hurt!!) Another time my throat was hurting and it was sinusitis. I had a sinus drip which affected my throat. If it's viral, you'll have to wait it out anyway, antibiotics will only help with bacterial infections. Only your doctor can determine this. Hope you feel better.

I don't know about the throat, but I used to get ear infections a lot, and it used to spread into my jaw, so I could barely open my mouth. Very painful and scary.
Painkillers won't fix it, you need antibiotics if it is an ear infection.
Seeing a doctor is not a waste of time, because there is more to looking at the throat to see what is wrong. They could also take a swab culture to determine what you have.
Go to the doctor, and in the meantime, try gargling with some very salty hot water. It will ease the pain for a while, and salt is a natural antiseptic.

Here's a remedy that does not require a doctor. Buy a bottle of garlic capsules and pierce one with a pin. Squeeze the garlic oil into your ear and lay there for 15-20 minutes. Do this 2x a day. After 2-3 days the pain should be gone. The one drawback is you smell like garlic. There are other remedies on this site but this one works the best for me. This helps with throat infections too

Go and see your Doctor. The pain is a warning something is wrong! You will not be wasting his time. He is the only one who can give you a true diagnosis and the treatment you may need. That's what he trained all those years for, its what he's paid for, (whether you(USA) or the Country(UK) pays him) and he'd prefer to treat a simple problem than a serious one.
Saying that> It does sound like an ear infection to me and IF it is, it needs treating with Anti-biotics, it could get worse than it is now and then you'll need his help!

What are you waiting for. Go to an ear - nose - throat specialist. With a throat culture you'll no immediately if you have strep (sp)throat. You may also have an ear infection and that can be dangerous to your health if untreated.

First, you don't "waste" a doctors time, you are paying for the service. Second, you need to be seen by someone to determine what is going on. Third, never take over the counter anything if you don't know what is going on, you are making things worse most likely.

Pull down on your ear lobe, if theinfection is in your ear, or eustacian tube, itwill hurt inside your ear. If it doesn't hurt, it couldbe a sinus infection. Whatever it is, after a week, you should probably get to the doctor.
