Fill the 5 gallon bucket and empty into the 3 gallon. That leaves 2 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket. Now empty the 3 gallon bucket and empty the 5 gallon bucket into the 3 gallon bucket.
Now you have 2 gallons in the 3 gallon bucket.
Fill the 5 gallon bucket and take one gallon out to fill the 3 gallon bucket, and now you have 4 gallons in your 5 gallon bucket.
Wasn't that fun?

Fill the 3 gallon bucket. Dump it into the 5 gallon. Then fill up the 5 gallon half way between the top and the water that is in it from the 3 gallon bucket. Ta Da!

if you pour the 5 gallon bucket into the three gallon bucket that will give you 2 gallons left in the five gallon. You then pour out the 3 gallon bucket and pour the remaining 2 gallons from the five into the 3 gallon bucket. then you fill the 5 gallon bucket and pour one gallon into the 3 gallon bucket making the 3 gallon bucket full and the 5 gallon bucket have 4 gallons left in it.

Put the hosepipe into the 5 gallon bucket, now at the rim of the bucket grab the hosepipe marking it with your ginger. now do the same with the 3 gallon busket. you now have two marks, so halfway between then is the 4 gallon mark. Papa said there is more ways than one to skin a cat.
