When you get tattoos you have to think about what you like, what's your favorite thing to do where are you at in your life. You could just go in and pick something or you can talk to a tattoo artist, tell them your hobbies, your interests, your favorite color, how you want your tattoo to make you feel. If they're serious about putting their art on you (and they should be) then they will put the time in to help you. I have six tattoos and I love them all. They have all come from turning points in my life and they remind me of where I have been and where I am going.

Having just spent months looking for tattoo designs for myself I've looked at quite a few sites. As well as tattoo finder that someone else has mentioned there is also cherrycreekflash. You can search by category as well as artist. Gail Somers has a big range of designs, some are dramatic but still feminine.
If you have some ideas visiting a tattoo place can be very helpfull they can try and stetch something for you
Good luck sometimes you'll know what you want as soon as you see it and sometimes you have to tweek designs to suit you (thats what i did!)

In my opinion if want simplicity but dramatic..tribal art is the way to go. Its lines and creative flow can reflect much of a persons personality without having detailed and over colorful images that will only fade with time.
No matter how good the quality of ink is..aged skin will change. Tribal art often maintains its presence, because the symmetrical imagery speaks for itself.
Tribal art doesnt just have to be just twisted, symemmtrical lines, i have seen amazing tribal butterflies and alike.
Anyways, just my opinion..FYI always, always do background check on your taTtooist and inquire on the quality of inks that he/she uses.
Good luck and happy inking.
Ps. the closer the tattoo is to the bone, the more it hurts:0

do something that has deep meaning to you. they are the ones you'll be happy with. i was going to do a large one across my entire back with one angel comforting someone that was sobbing as if she just recieved the worst news of her life. i wound up getting an angel in prayer with out the halo. (an angel's always got my back) my dad has four tattoos and he's happiest with the two that have meaning to him. i'm getting another that has meaning to me of a cross and in front of it a phoenix coming out of the ashes and the sun rising from behind the cross and instead of the sun being yellow it's going to have my kids' birth stone colors in it. there are a lot of websites with tattoos on them you can look at and get some ideas and a lot of times you can get one drawn for you. my dad took two pictures and took elements from both of them and had the guy draw one for him and it turned out really nice.

Have you been to the tattoo shop yet? Most have a huge selection of tattoos to select from...or at least get ideas from.
Also, the web has a ton of pages to use for ideas.
For me, I always try to get meaningful tattoos...my four are: rose (got with 2 other gals, flower of my sorority), a sunbird with 4-leaf clover (good luck), a phoenix (rebirth), and a Maori symbol for prosperity/someone to watch over me.

Since everyone has different opinions and styles why would you get suggestions from strangers as to what to put on your body permanently? Think about this on your own

it depends on what you like, dont get the usual. Get something japanese like a koi fish or of a geisha girl.
or do something that looks real, like if you get a butterfly, ask for it to look as real as possible. not like the fake looking cartoons. just get something you think will be different.
