I would think that maybe about 15 to 30 minutes. That is about how long you leave in for a perm, or to frost your hair. I lived in a house with well water like that. I got Culligan water softening tank installed and it helped. It takes a couple of washings to get everything looking the way it should be. It cost me $25.00 amonth. They come every month to change the tanks.

I know exactly what you are talking about, I had iron water at one time and it ruined my natural blond hair. I tried everything under the sun to get it out, nothing worked. It ruined my clothes, hair, nails and tubs(had to clean tub with Lysol toilet bowl cleaner). I believe it's the worse water on earth. I suggest getting a water softener.
BTW...I lived in W.V at the time. Theres a lot of iron water in that country. Good Luck!

I don't think vinegar and lemon would have much affect.

I never heard of this, thanks for the info.
I use baking soda in my shampoo, it softens the 'hard' in my water. I use it in my wash, my bathtub, my dish water, my toothpaste, to wash my face.

I LOVE BAKING SODA!!!
