running on grass is best...there is shock absorption so it' not as hard on your joints, but it's also a better workout than a treadmill, which does some of the work for you by propelling you forward. if grass isn't an option, i'd stick with the treadmill...just put on some good music to avoid boredom!

If your knees hurt while running on cement, you're probably wearing them down. A treadmill is a little more forgiving, as it tends to have some give to it as you come into contact with it. If you want to run outside, the best bet is to run on the grass or dirt NEXT to the cement so you stay on the path (such as if you're in a park or running course) as well as keep a better track of your distance run.

Treadmill is way better than cement. I run 10 K a day on my treadmill. When i used to run on cement i would sprain my ankles from the impact.

Obviously the treadmill had some cushioning that the cement does have.
However, you shouldn't have your knees hurt, at least until you start training for really long distances (and if you were a marathon runner, you won't ask here). Get fitted for high-quality shoes by your local runner's shop, and then run with long-distance experts who can help your stride.

You can do both, but you should avoid running often on cement because of the impact it places on your knees and joints.
