Hominy grits, yes. But grits, polenta, corn meal mush -- it's all the same thing: corn meal mixed with enough water and seasoning. (I actually like to cook up grits, let them set up in a loaf pan in the fridge overnight, slice off a piece and fry it up. Slathered with butter and syrup -- yummy.)

You've probably never had good hominy, then.
Grits are actually closer to cream-of-wheat in taste and texture, but there is a bit of a hominy taste to them too.

Grits smell like corn. Hominy smells like some kinda acid-soggy-used-to-be-a-corn-kernel-slop.

grits are ground corn. hominy is soaked in a lye solution.
some say that grits taste like cream of wheat....but duh! grits are corn, cream of wheat is.....wheat!
they have their own unique taste....consider trying them with butter, salt and pepper for breakfast....serve with toast.
there are some great side dishes that use grits with green chilis to be served with dinner.
