If it's people you don't know. I would say after the first week.
If it's people you do know and haven't seen since the New Year started, I would say up to about a month you could get away with it.

But towards the end of that month it's a bit more of a joking way of saying we should be in touch more often!

I use it only during January and only the first time I've spoken to that person in the month.

For example... if it's Jan 15th, but we have not spoke since last year, I say it then I don't say it again to that person.

When january is over then you can stop saying it because it won't make sense. January marks as the new month of (the new year) so after this month...No more new year Hun ok?
