While we abhor swearing. We categorize it among other things in the world that we can't control like people who smoke, divorce, indulge in premarital sex, drink alcohol etc...
Teens will listen to it whether we "allow" them or not. We don't have to buy it for them. Foul language is prevalent in society. We can't shield them from the world. When they are 4,5, 6, etc... obviously, they can't understand why they shouldn't use such language. However, as a teen they have reasoning skills that allow them to make the conscious decision NOT to use it even though it is in the lyrics of some songs. Purchasing edited music is a good way to help limit the content although it doesn't completely eliminate it.
I have found that when teens get together and are listening to music that as soon as a "bad" word plays they quickly fast forward of their own accord and find it embarassing. I would prefer that my children be able to make their own decisions with guidance and not just out of blind fear of getting into trouble. This isn't the way to help them fight peer pressure.
It's only a big issue if you make it one. The time when they tested themselves was in their early teens (13,14,15). Now they are all 16 and over and they seldom if ever listen to music with that language. They all know how to read, write, and compose music. All of mine have marched and competed in National and State competitions for music. They are well rounded in their selections which range from classical to jazz to hip-hop and alternative.
Don't limit your child's ability to make decisions and discoveries for themselves.

Because that kind of music has been around since the dawn of time (You should have heard what I listened too as a kid!) and because most of the time the kids aren't even hearing the words, they listen to the music/melody rather than the words. But if YOU want to censor what your children listen to then by all means do so. But don't tell me what to allow my now 21 year old child to listen to...thanks.

I feel that it is not about what they hear in music or see on Tv. If you raise you child right whats wrong with them decideing to listen to whatever music they like. You just have to teach them good morals and valuse. A song is just a song. I feel people read to much into tv and music. THe other day some said something to me about letting my son watch cops with all the drugs and violence. Why not teach him what the world is really like. Instead of sheltering him and then one day he wakes up and relizes the world is a much darker place then he thought? Plus with cops i see it as a good thing. I always tell him look at how dumb them people look and act.

Society has changed. There is more violence on t.v., adults swearing in public. As a mother of a 15 year old, I let him listen to what he likes when he is with his friends, as a part of himself growing up....although I do set limits to it. I don't allow him to put it on the car radio when I am with him, I do not allow him to play that music around his 8yr old brother.
As we were all teenagers at one point, we all ( i am sure) listened to things not appropriate that our parents would not like. You cannot hide the world from them, but you can as a parent, limit to where and when they can listen to it.
Teenagers are explorers and will explore with the times of music and movies in this age, better to set limitations than to disregard them from what is really out there.
That is my opinion

first of all if u don't let them listen to their music they will find a way okay...I should now. If you do not let ur teen listen to what they want its basically saying "you can not listen to it when i am around but u can hide it from me"
so u better not waste your time

Why do you let your teens have sex? Why do you allow them to watch movies with violence and sexual content in them? Why do you allow them to play games with violent and/or sexual themes? Some people, like my mother for instance, knows or has come to reality that you can't shelter your child for their whole lives. You only can give them your values and teach them your morals and let them grow. Even if you do try to shelter your kids. Believe 9 out of 10 they are doing what you are trying to shield them from. So its really pointless to tell someone especially a teenager that they can't do this or that. You might as well give them the okay. Cause just because you don't allow it doesn't mean your child's friends' parents don't allow it. So to ask why do you let your teens do this is like asking why are you allowing it to rain.. No matter how many prayers you make or rules you have its gonna happen whether you like it or not..

I don't understand what the big deal is. Everywhere you go you hear ADULTS using swear words at the grocery store, at the park, in restaurants, at schools, anywhere and everywhere. I mean just b/c they listen to music that has swearing doesn't mean that is the reason why they are out there cussing. It is the environment that does that. I was at the park with my 18 month old and the lady next to me on her cell phone was cussing at the person she was talking to ... around all the children... so what is wrong with music that has cussing in it??? Your children and young adults are going to pick up anywhere, even on tv they are getting away with swearing now... that is like blaming video games with violence... you see just as much violence on tv on the evening news, cops, cnn... just like see you ADULTS using swear words.... it is your job as a parent to teach your child right from wrong... I don't know alot of cds out there that doesn't have atleast one swear word in it besides gospel and christian music. I honestly don't see anything wrong with it... they are going to pick up swear words even without you letting them listen to that music.... its our society

Well on TV and on the radio most words I consider to be swears are edited out and so the only way my children would be hearing the actual swears would be if they bought an unedited CD and the only way they can do that is with my permission thanks to the parental advisory!

I dont have any teenagers YET..but I do have preteens and they listen to whatever they want as long as it isnt sexually vulgar. I might as well let them listen to music with cursing in it since they hear it everywhere else, from school to on TV. I dont see the point in censoring children from those types of things when they lhear it anyway.
