Over the past week I have noticed a woman who I believe just joined my gym. I have seen her on 3 or 4 different occasions and nearly every single time we pass each other there is direct eye contact, sometimes a couple times per workout. Unfortunately she is normally working out with others so I haven't had the opportunity to talk to her. Is the gym a suitable place to ask a person out and if so how would I breach that gap and not come off too strong?

You can ask out a woman anywhere, except maybe at her own wedding or a funeral. First - make sure she isn't wearing a wedding ring (it'll be on her left hand.)
Next time you guys make eye contact, smile at her. Is she smiles back, then you know she isn't completely scared off. Then, feel free just to go up and say hi to her. Just hi, that's fine. Keep it light, keep it easy, don't talk to much - something like "I just wanted to say hi - I've seen you around the past few days." if she responds warmly, then you can ask her out for coffee or something simple. Try to do this when she's not with her friends, though! Girls in a group = danger!

I think you should try to talk to her during work-out time, even if she is with other people. I don't think you should ask her out until you have talked with her a few times.

well don't ask her out ... just start a normal converstaion up talk to her see how everything is with her and ask her if shes doing anything that week. and then that should work out for you
