Notice 1 Corinthians 2

Paul clearly teaches that the spirit guides through the words he taught, the word of God! Verse 12 says, "Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual."

God has always communicated his will for man through words. Faith itself comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17).

Study this word, the Bible! Handle it correctly and it can equip you with everything needed for all good works. (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

I would say a good place to start is to earnestly pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit. If you have ever had the feeling that something is trying to tell you something, pay close attention. It is usually the Spirit talking and it is more of a feeling than hearing, but He is quite sure trying to tell you something if you will only heed that still, small voice.

There is a place in which the unsanctified mind and heart cannot enter. There are hidden recesses of the heart, deep down in the unseen realm of the human life, where the Holy Spirit dwells and where He teaches us right decisions and sanctified purposes. It is in this hidden sphere of activity in the inner life that the Holy Spirit takes up His residence and there He moves and impels us to become filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Spiritual understanding comes only with the growth of the spiritual person. One who wishes to know the leading of God must yield himself completely—mind, heart, will, imagination, personality—to the control of the Holy Spirit. The Christian must open up his life to the continual abiding presence of the Spirit of holiness and power

The holy spirit lives inside the "true" believer who has done what is necessary to be saved: hear the word, believe the bible and believe jesus is the son of God, repent of sin in your life and be sorry for it, confess jesus to others and confess jesus as the son of God, and be immersed in baptism to receive the forgiveness of your sins...acts 2:38, galatians 3:27, I Peter 3:21, Romans 6:1-6, thereby receiveing the grace of God...salvation.

As you read the Bible and pray for guidance you will receive it.

Read your Bible every day. Trust it, obey it always.

Here's what I have learned over 20 years walking with God: God will lead you, but that will include you making mistakes from which to learn. The steps of the righteous are ordered by God and that is not because of your faith or devotion. You pray in order to be "enlightened" as you walk out those ordered steps, not so that your steps will be ordered of God. They already are, it's just not so as to avoid all mistakes and errors.
It is also important to lean in to the Holy Spirit through prayer, study of the scripture and faith. This is what the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is about and it affects your ability to discern things as you walk out your journey. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are very helpful and include insightful "words" through others in the context of community. These are called Words of Knowledge and Words of Wisdom. Tongues and visions are often involved, however, people's humanity is also involved and you will only cultivate these gifts, if God gives them, through experience and you will only learn to discern whether other Christians who claim to operate in them are worth their salt or not. I have known many charismatics and Pentecostals, and very few are so sharp as to rarely be off the mark when they prophesy.
Good Luck. Draw near to God.

John 14 has some answers to this (verse 15 and following). In a nutshell, you first have to be committed to Jesus as Lord of your life (v15). As part of that covenant relationship, He promises to provide you with the Holy Spirit (v16). The role of the Holy Spirit is to teach, counsel, and comfort you (providing Jesus' peace to you). He applies the Word of God to situations in your life by bringing to mind Jesus' words.

So, for instance, when God causes you to recall or draws you to a passage of Scripture that applies to your circumstances, it's one way in which the Holy Spirit speaks to you.

At that point, you have a responsibility to step out obediently in a response of faith to do what He's shown you. This can be really scary (that's why it's faith, after all), but God prepares you for each step of faith in the context of the love relationship He pursues with you and you cultivate with Him (it takes time and faithfulness). He will never tell you something which contradicts His Word. He works with you in the context of the love relationship you enjoy with Him.

when you are "born again" or "born of thr Spirit", God sends The Holy Spirit to indwell you, to provide guidance for you and to lead you in the proper direction. You can also ask Jesus to open the right doors for you according to God's plan for your life.
when you are born again, great things happen.
John 3: The Words of Jesus Christ (God in the flesh)
3. "Verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God."
4. Nicodemus saith unto Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?"
5. Jesus answered, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God."
6. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
16. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18. He that believeth on Him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

I find that the hardest things to do are usually the right decisions.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, soul and strength. Sometime even what we "think" may seem ok, but really isn't - this is where my hardest things are usually right theory comes into place.

Pray quietly, listen and don't be distracted - it will come to you.
