Alright, I have a 1 and a half year old cat, he's a bit over weight, not too much though. Hes started sneezing a lot, well its not that much maybe like 3 sneezes a day, but it still worries me. I'd take him to the vet, but I am really broke, money is really tight right now, and I just want to know if theres anything I can do before having to take him to the vet. We used to smoke in our house, and when he started this sneezing we started to go outside for his sake, just in case that could be the problem.

Could be the smoke, could be a dust particulate type. Why do you sneeze? Same reasons. Doesn't kill you(you don't have to see a doctor). It is just something that is tickling the nose. I know, I could get my cat to sneeze by using the tip of a feather and tickle him while he snoozed.
Don't forget, animals are closer to the ground where the dust is.
Not a worry

I have a cat that sneezed a lot. I assumed it was allergies until one day I noticed the bad breath. She had a tooth so rotten that it was causing her to have a chronic sinus infection. Cats experience tooth pain different from the way we do. Cavities start inside and by the time you can see it on the outside they can be in excruciating pain. I understand about lack of money, but if you can't afford to care for your pets then you should not have them. This is why this has to be my last cat. I just cannot afford vet bills any longer. Just because an animal is young is not any reason to assume there won't be health problems until they are older or when they do show a symptom it's minor.

There are over 50 toxins in exhaled smoke and cats are particularly sensitive to many of them. The shelters I got my kitties from refuse to let them for adoption to smokers. You are going outside now, but if you've been smoking all this time with the cat present, the toxins are on your clothes (every time you puff), and in your curtains, your sofa, your bedding and your rugs. Vacuuming helps but washing all these surfaces is necessary to truly remove the toxins. Avoid re-exposure.
Cats also can have allergies just like we do: they can be allergic to dust (again- vaccuum and wash!) or they can also be allergic to fleas and mites, or other allergens.
Three sneezes a day is not a huge amount unless he is having wet nasty sneezes. In that case, take kitty to vet: if not drippy contagious type, wait til next appointment and be sure and mention it to vet.

Cats can have asthma, and smoke will irritate them. If there's no green or yellow discharge from his eyes or nose, and he's not squinting, keep an eye on him. If he is doing any of these things, you will need to find some money to take him to the vet. Let the vet know finances are tight when you call, they will try to work with you on that.

I doubt it's the tobacco/nicotine in the air. I know people with cats who smoke and indoor smoking didn't affect them. So unless your cat has a particularly sensitive sense of smell, I don't think smoking is the problem.

A cat sneezing a handful of times like that is rare, but not unheard of. I doubt you have anything to worry about.

Cats are really prone to upper-respiratory infections.....you really should go to a vet, but if your broke go to the grocery store and get Vitamin C and give it to him three times a day...it should knock it on the head

Could be a cold or could be something very worse like cat flu. He needs to be looked at if there are other symptoms. If he has a cat flu it could be very serious indeed. I have posted a link

if he is getting a cold, give him vit c human grade, crush 1/2 of a 500mg vit c and mix it in with his wet food. that's what i gave my kitty when he began to sneeze and that solved the problem

upper respiratory infection (URI) may be the cause. Your kitty really needs to be seen a vet soon as he could get secondary infections from the URI.
