My daughter, 16, has had a swollen gland that keep recuring every 1-2 months. If we don't have it treated with antibiotics right away,it will affect her tonsils. It has done that two times and she DOES NOT want those tonsils taken out..lol Today I took her to the doc with a swollen gland again~no fever, no other symptoms, a little sore throat. He reccomends a CT SCAN?? I freaked out. I took her to the hospital, we agreed to have it done until we read about the side effects of the dye they use. My daughter was in tears. I mean I had lots of bouts of swollen glands as a kid and never once needed a CT scan. The doc said he was looking for an absess NOT any kind of cancer. But as my pharmasist said, wouldn't an absess to treated by antibiotics anyway??? My daughter and I are confused. What should we do?????

Have the scan. Ignorance may be bliss but it's also a pain in the behind if it's causeing health issues that you could have fixed easily

Btw a CT scan is just a Fancy xray machine it can give the dr a better look at whats happening on the inside

Scans are reletively safe I myself have an MRI every 6 months do to medical condition that needs to be kept track of. There not that scary once you know what ot expect. And they generaly don't take long

ohh and if the condition is reoccuring then the antibiotics are killing the symptoms .. but there not killing the cause. < just like an ulcer if you take a bit of pepto you relive the pain but it's going to keep coming back until you do somehting about it to heal the ulcer

Thats my 2 cents anyways Good Luck :)

Your only real choice is to have the CT Scan done! Wouldn't you like to feel confident that there isn't something more to her situation? Don't let fear stop you from doing the test!
