TANSTAAFL, my friend: There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Somebody pays for it. The only question is whether it's the same person that eats it. But it ain't free.
I take it you are getting tired of the school lunch program being so expensive and the cafeteria gets trashed with kids showing off to each other about what a mess they can make. And kids making a mess for any number of reasons.
I think the main reason they don't have kids do chores in the cafeteria in the public schools is insurance, followed by union rules regarding the people who do clean up. Certainly it would be character-building if the kids had some responsibility for getting the food prepared, and cleaned up after.
There are schools that have culinary arts classes, and they prepare food, and cleaning up is a reasonable adjunct to that work. Other than that, people don't seem to connect between who eats it and who pays for it, which is not good for anyone.

I agree to a point. The person who said something about a 5 year old cleaning for their lunch. well, they are completely right, a young child like that shouldn't have to. I could see having the high school and even older jr. high kids maybe helping in the cafeteria to serve lunches or something, to get free lunch. But it's no good if a really small child does it, like a preschooler or kindergardener... that's just cruel. also, what about having the parents do something with p.t.a, or maybe help by doing fundraisers or something. Then there is the point that, yes, it is the taxpayers helping feed these children with free lunches, but this is our future, don't we want to make sure they are taken care of, so that when they get older they can help our world be a better place? there are endless answers to this whole question/controversy

Because a child can not be punished for the parents not being able to afford school lunches. Being a kid from a poor family is punishment enough.
However, asking the parent(s) to donate some of their time to the school would certainly not be unreasonable. Working for a couple hours a week for your child's school would be both rewarding, and good for the children who's lives they would be more involved in.

you answered your own question, beginning with "i had to" and continuing with some bitter, judgmental stuff. then you top it off with "i hope we don't let this government make Slaves out of us with their free lunch, and laws that only want to control every part of our life"....oh, you mean, like the 'good Catholic School' you went to? cause it's alot cheaper to get kids to do the work for food bought in bulk than to pay an adult...like a professional janitor. and the last time i checked the government was only condemning people to Jail for breaking its laws, unlike the church.
how judgmental is it to stereo-type poor children, teaching them "work ethics" by requiring them to clean-up after more privileged fellow classmates! did the Catholic School say your parents had no ethics OR did they just insinuate it? and then you had to pay the price for it? you know, the whole 'sins of the parents being visited on the children' thing.
there's a saying good intention paves the way to hell. and another, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? but you wouldn't be the first poor person to have to survive something somebody else deemed 'best' for you...and them. or didn't they cover that in the 'good' school you went to?
i'm not angry at you. i'm just outraged that you were treatly unfairly and 'educated' to just accept it. as for letting kids work as young as they can-we have labor laws regarding children to protect them from abuse at the hands of people either profiting from the abuse or helping to perpetuate it. a topic covered in my public school years of education.
remember questioning the church, school or any practice of discrimination are not the same as questioning God. it's called questioning the 'the powers that be'. who told you they had it right?

Sorry to tell you this, they already have. I put my daughter to volunteering this last summer at the Senior Citizens Center in our town. She was real ticked off about having to work for free. I told her, I was paying her. I pay for her Tae Kwon Do and Girl Scouts EVERY MONTH. She can do something for everyone else. She got over it. She actually decided she liked it. She wants to go back this summer. I think kids should be allow/required to work as soon as possible without interfering with their schoolwork. Even (gasp) VOLUNTEERING at the school in the cafeteria. OH MY GOD. Did I say VOLUNTEER???? TANSTAAFL is right Auntb...Somebody pays. I read Heinlein too. :)

food is a human right!
it is not their fault that their parents were irresponsible and brought them into the world without being able to afford it. they're already going to have many hurdles, especially as they get older and with how kids can be cruel. why punish them twice for being poor? when i was a kid, cleaning the chalkboard is what you did when you talked in class.

then it wouldn't be free eh? hehe. just kidding. i'm in agreement with you... parents spoil their kids rotten from generation to generation in societies that have too much money. also, it doesn't take a family to be rich to spoil the kids, it's the attitooood of the parents... pandering to their kids every whim.
i say make them work as i'm sure most of the users did growing up.

It is not the kids's fault that their parents cannot afford to pay for the school lunches. How about the parents go out and get a 2nd job and stop relying on taxpayers to pay their way?
