To have a fear of God is more of a respect than a actual fear like being scared. Proverbs says we should only fear God when we come into his knowledge. God is all knowing and all powerful, and anyone who has that much power deserves to be respected if not in fact feared.

The Bible explains that “the fear of Jehovah means the hating of bad.” (Proverbs 8:13) A Bible lexicon describes this hatred as “an emotional attitude toward persons and things which are opposed, detested, despised and with which one wishes to have no contact or relationship.” So godly fear includes an inner aversion or disgust toward all that is bad in God's eyes. (Psalm 97:10) It impels us to turn aside from bad, just as we would back away from the edge of a cliff when our instinctive fear sounds the alarm. “In the fear of God one turns away from bad,” says the Bible.—Proverbs 16:6

I suppose you have a healthy "fear" of the police. If you were going to commit a crime, you'd be best off to try and commit the crime where there were no police officers in sight.

Now, do you fear the police, or the power the police have to inforce justice on your actions. I'd say that it is a fear of the jurisdiction the police have to enforce a just punishment.

Now, our fear of God is based on a similar idea. We are not "afraid" of God, for He said in His word to approach His throne boldly. However, He is the ultimate enforcer of justice. Unfortunately, the penalty of sin is death. And God is the one responsible for enforcing that sentence. You should fear that fact that the penalty of sin is death, that God is the enforcer of that penalty, and that God is purely just, which means the penalty has to be paid.

However, God himself provided His only Son as a substitute for you. Those who accept Jesus as their Lord will be cleared of their offences throughout life. That's the grace of God. Those who reject this gift will have to pay the ultimate penalty, which is death and eternal separation from God.

Royal racer is right. This is an awe kind of fear.
The reason we're supposed to fear him is that we need to be obeying Him. We're supposed to have the same kind of fear of God as we would of a really important person. But He is so powerful than anyone on this earth... I mean He created us...

If you think about it, it means a fear of displeasing Him. Because the Bible says countless times "have no fear" (morbid fear). we need to be afraid of going against what He says not Him Himself.
