Poliomyelitis, often called polio or infantile paralysis, is a virally induced infectious disease which spreads via the fecal-oral route. It may proceed to the blood stream and into the central nervous system causing muscle weakness and often paralysis. An ancient disease, it was first recognized as a medical entity by Jakob Heine in 1840. Vaccination and eradication efforts led by the World Health Organization and The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International are credited with the reduction of the number of annual diagnosed cases from the hundreds of thousands to around a thousand.

Poliomyelitis, better known as Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It invades the nervous system, and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age, but affects mainly children under three (over 50% of all cases).

In 1988 a strategy was started to erradicate polio worldwide by the year 2005.
The battle is still not over yet but mayor progress has been made since then and in 2006 there were only 1902 cases registered.

The best source I have found is on http://www.polioeradication.org/disease.asp

There you will find general details on symptoms, transmission, treatment, history, current situation worldwide etc.

I have no idea how to speak French, but I'll try to explain it so it can be translated.

It's a disease, largely eradicated now, that used to cause paralysis. Whole hospitals were filled with victims of this virus, until Doctor Salk and Doctor Sabin (if I remember right) discovered how to make a vaccine for it.

Good question, poliomyelitis was unfortunately common until a vaccine was created for it, you might know it by its common name polio. It affects the muscles and nerves, causing weakness, tiredness, pain, peralysis and other similar symptoms.
