Hey everyone. I love my german shepherd so much, but he is a teen and he is just way to HYPER!! Is this just some sort of age thing? I have tried walking him but he is so strong and if he sees another person he will run to them with me holding the leash, and lord knows i better run with that dog or i will fall and break my neck if i try to hold him back lol. Please help me solve this.
Thank you very much
<3 yall

First, you need to let him know YOU are in charge, or the "alpha dog"! Watch a few eps of "The Dog Whisper", to see how he does this (it's REALLY easy--we have a hyper husky!). He used to spazz out constantly, but now I can walk him and he stays right by me. Tug quickly on the leash (do this in the yard or house, with no distractions, first) whenever he gets ahead of you, and either say "no" or "shhh" or some sound so eventually, you can use that sound alone if he gets loose.

Make sure YOU enter and exit doors first, signifying you are the leader. Also, stay calm and don't whine or yell at him. To dogs, this signifies lack of control, and they'll take advantage of it. After he gets this concept, start walking in safe areas, correcting him with a tug if he gets ahead. He DOES need alot of exercise, but it's no fun if he's dragging you along! With less practice than you think, you will soon be able to walk him pleasantly. This will calm him down when he's at home, too. Make sure you're consistent, asserting YOUR dominance whenever he does something you don't like (jumping on people, rushing the door, getting on furniture, etc.). A simple nudge, or light grab of the scruff of his neck will say to him, in "dog language" that you don't approve.

Practice and don't give up! German shepherds are great!

i also have a young german shepard who is very hyper. You have to first show him that you are the pack leader. When you go out the door you must not allow him to go out first. he needs to follow you not the other way around. I use a picher collar and i work with mine outside everyday for at least a half an hour. I make his sit when i stop and always keep him to the side of you or behind you. German Shepard are working dogs and the train very easy. You will notice a difference after the first training. Also i would recommend that you watch cesar Milan, The dog wisperer on the animal planet. It has really helped me with mine.

Well, unless you want him for breeding, neuter him. That'll knock some of it out of him. Other than that, take a few obedience lessons at Petsmart or somewhere.

they might want to play outside or you can stop him by spanking him.
