Many Popes throughout history have ordered the killing of innocent people.

Does this mean it is moral to murder as long as it is in the name of God...?

Between Gregory I (590) and Gregory VII, also known as Hilderbrand, (1073) there were 92 Popes and these two are the only ones recorded to have had some morality. Gregory I introduced the Pastoral Rule which they all swear by yet fail to maintain. The Pope is seen as being infallible which is based on a forged document which their actions in history has proved wrong. The Papal position to this day is that reading of the Bible is for the laity only, the only legitimate church is the Catholic Church and the only way to salvation is to submit to the Pope.

The Crusades (et al.) were atrocious, horrible times. I'm not proud of that particular part of my Catholic-Christian heritage.

Please remember, the popes are all individual people. Most have been fairly decent leaders, and a few have been truly great (Leo the Great, Gregory the Great, the wonderful & amazing John Paul II...) but most popes have not been made saints. And sadly, there have been some truly awful popes. Part of that came from Medieval times when the pope was not only a religious leader but also a POLITICAL leader.

Politics.....(fill in an explative of your choice).

Now, you said "many." I don't think it's been "many," but please, I'd love to know the statistics.

Some popes over the centuries have mistaken their own will to be God's, and we still suffer the cosequences.

of course not... the Pope is a human being and can err and commit sin... the history of the papacy proves that

I am not a Catholic but I have tremendous respect for the Pope - especially Pope John Paul II who recently died.

If this did happen, it goes completely against Catholic teaching.

NO, and besides IF THE POPE SPOKE FOR GOD, then Those PRIESTS AND BISHOPS that molested those BOYS, would be in Prision! And the Pope would have Ex-Communicated THEM!

Thanks, RR

The Pope is a cult leader and the Catholic church has committed many atrocities under the ruse of being Christian.
