Your mom sounds like a jerk. Then again, maybe she is just very structural. Try just telling her that a guy asked you to the winter formal and that it is traditional to go to the formal. Tell her what you plan to do in the order that you plan to do it and when she can expect to see you back (probably early). I suppose it's also possible that parents can volunteer to chaperone at the winter formal? That's another possibility anyhow.
Anyhow, I can't say I'd know exactly what I'd do because my parents were not so strict. I think my dad woud have been more like (if I was a girl), "well, don't go and get drunk and knocked up, ok?" My mom? I think she would get all excited and want to make a dress and come up with all these great ideas and pretty much plan the whole event for the poor guy. She would definitely already be on the winter formal chaperone committee. Sounds like your mom might be grumpy because she doesn't get to do that. Or maybe at least she isn't that much of a control freak...
Hmm... Yeah, she may be very conventional and prefer the old-fashioned guy asking the parents routine too... You should already know that though...

Mom guess what? I was asked by that really nice boy in my bible study class to go to winter formal. I want to invite him and his parents over this weekend so we can all meet each other and then we can be relaxed about the quality of family he is a part of ok?

Mom...a guy invited me to winter formal...I know the "rules" about guys but I really want to go, all my friends are going and I want to go too.
If she doesnt let you go scape thru the window, Thats what I did when I was a teen. But I never got in trouble and NEVER DID ANYTHING WRONG, DONT DRINK, SMOKE OR DO SOMETHING STUPID because if you do, yes, you are going to get in trouble, a big trouble!
Good luck!

Just say you are going to the formal with some friends even though your going with this guy. It's not really lying cause your friends will be there i assume, so tell her and have a good time.

You can tell her then let her meet the guy, before the formal, so she can judge for herself rather he is a decent person or not.

It depends. Is the guy normal? Or someone that your mom would approve?
Or is he something you know your parents wouldn't approve?
If you think they would approve, than maybe if you invited him over so they could meet him that would put an end to all of their worries?

Ask her if she would like to meet this guy. And see if he is ok for you to take to the formal, also ask if you can meet his parents.

Have the guy come to your house smartly dressed and have him ask your mothers permission to escort you to the formal.
Perhaps you your mother will appreciate the old fashioned politeness of it and let you go?
