I think first you must realize who you are, and the people around you..and once you do that, you pick which group you want to join. This might sound a bit far-fetched, but its how society runs. So i don't really understand what the question is actually saying, every man for himself in what? are we in this together? in what? can you add some details? so yea, might change my answer, i think its an interesting topic...

To at least some degree, we are all in this together. Evolution applies to societies as well as species, and a society which has better moral values will survive preferably to one that does not. It is obvious that some level of cooperation will be useful in assisting a society to survive. The trade-off between societal values and individual values is the stuff of politics, and I'm not going to touch that here.
